LIFEBOAT REPAIR & SERVICE
MEASURES TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS WITH LIFEBOAT
The Maritime Safety Committee, at its eighty-first session 10 to 19 May 2006, recalled that at its seventy-fifth session (15 to 24 May 2002), it had considered the issue of unacceptably high number of accidents with lifeboats in which crew were being injured, sometimes fatally, while participating in lifeboat drills and/or inspections, and noted that most accidents fell under the following categories:
-Failure of on-load releasing mechanism; -Inadvertent operation of on-load release mechanism; -Inadequate maintenance of lifeboats, davit and launching equipment; -Communication failures; -Lack of familiarity with lifeboat, davit, equipment and associated controls; -Unsafe practices during lifeboat drills and inspection; and -Design faults other than on-load release mechanisms.
In order to prevent further accidents IMO has issued new requirements for PERIODIC SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE OF LIFEBOATS, LAUNCHINGAPPLIANCES AND ON - LOAD RELEASING GEAR. There are two scopes of server icing annually and five yearly.
In order to assist you with compliance with the above requirements we at SGMS have a long history of Repair and servicing lifeboats of various manufacturers. SGMS in also an officially approved lifeboat Service Station by authority of the Thai Marine Department and New Marine lifeboat manufacturer.
